"Unlike other animals, human beings spend a lot of time thinking about what is not going on around them, contemplating events that happened in the past, might happen in the future, or will never happen at all. Indeed, “stimulus-independent thought” or “mind wandering” appears to be the brain’s default mode of operation. Although this ability is a remarkable evolutionary achievement that allows people to learn, reason, and plan, it may have an emotional cost. Many philosophical and religious traditions teach that happiness is to be found by living in the moment, and practitioners are trained to resist mind wandering and “to be here now.” These traditions suggest that a wandering mind is an unhappy mind. Are they right?" (@ SCIENCE www.sciencemag.org, NOVEMBER 2010)


Matthew A. Killingsworth and Daniel T. Gilbert (Harvard University, Cambridge, MA 02138, USA) searched for an answer for this question, and they used a Web application for the iPhone, through which they created "an unusually large database of real-time reports of thoughts, feelings, and actions of a broad range of people as they went about their daily activities. The application contacts participants through their iPhones at random moments during their waking hours, presents them with questions, and records their answers to a database at www.trackyourhappiness.org. The database currently contains nearly a quarter of a million samples from about 5000 people from 83 different countries who range in age from 18 to 88 and who collectively represent every one of 86 major occupational categories."

Here is a summary of the results:

The largest bubble (“not mind wandering”) corresponds to 53.1% of the samples, and the smallest bubble (“praying/worshipping/meditating”) corresponds to 0.1% of the samples.


Their analysis revealed three things (adapted from source):
- First, people’s minds wandered frequently, regardless of what they were doing. Mind wandering occurred in 46.9% of the samples and in at least 30% of the samples taken during every activity except making love. Surprisingly, the nature of people’s activities had only a modest impact on whether their minds wandered and had almost no impact on the pleasantness of the topics to which their minds wandered.

- Second, multilevel regression revealed that people were less happy when their minds were wandering than when they were not, and this was true during all activities, including the least enjoyable. Although people’s minds were more likely to wander to pleasant topics (42.5% of samples) than to unpleasant topics (26.5% of samples) or neutral topics (31% of samples),
people were no happier when thinking about pleasant topics than about their current activity and were considerably unhappier when thinking about neutral topics or unpleasant topics than about their current activity.

- Third, what people were thinking was a better predictor of their happiness than was what they were doing. The nature of people’s activities explained 4.6% of the within-person variance in happiness and 3.2% of the between-person variance in happiness, but mind wandering explained 10.8% of within-person variance in happiness and 17.7% of between-person variance in happiness. The variance explained by mind wandering was largely independent of the variance explained by the nature of activities, suggesting that the two were independent influences on happiness.

Talasnicos
Desfazem-se na boca num festival de sabores com nuances a mel e castanha. São os Talasnicos, pequenos bolos conventuais nascidos no Talasnal, uma das Aldeias do Xisto do concelho da Lousã. Apesar da fama e de muitas tentativas de plágio, é nas mãos de Mirita Meira Santos que vive o segredo da receita original. É na Lojinha do Talasnico que se vendem, juntamente com licores artesanais de folha de figueira, amora, castanha, bolota, serrano e também jeropiga; compotas de abóbora, tomate, chila, framboesa, figo, frutos silvestres, abrunho e a ‘castanhada’ que se deve comer como uma sobremesa acompanhada no prato com natas doces, por exemplo; há ainda as infusões da Planta do Xisto (Cerdeira) e artesanato local diverso.

Estou a gostar muito da minha mais recente compra:



A primeira faixa é completamente viciante! E, om alguma surpresa, verifiquei que a voz da Rita Redshoes combina perfeitamente com o estilo musical do Legendary Tiger Man.

Resumindo, já sabia que ia gostar mas mesmo assim foi uma surpresa, pela positiva! Agora, gostava era de ver isto ao vivo, mas não deve ser fácil juntar tanta gente... :)

E por falar em "ao vivo", sempre vamos ver David Fonseca? M? :)

Não poderíamos ter escolhido dia melhor para ir assistir a este espectéculo, pois é exactamente no Dia Internacional da Música.

Anda-se a falar muito do "nosso" evento por aí... :)

De volta à realidade

Acabaram-se as férias! Hora de voltar à "vida normal"! Não, ainda não vou falar sobre as férias, porque estou à espera das fotos... :)


E quando sincronizamos de novo com o mundo, com que nos deparamos?
Os casos de gripe A continuam a aumentar. Não é novidade... Estar atentos e cumprir as medidas de prevenção é o que nos resta... Deixar de viver é que não...!
Na política continuam as trocas de acusações e a política do "votem-em-nós-não-porque-somos-bons-mas-porque-os-outros-são-piores..."
Estou para ver o que sairá destas eleições... Já se sabe que um dos "grandes" ganhará e muito se discute sobre maiorias absolutas. Até posso concordar que é difícil governar em Portugal de outra forma, mas não consigo deixar de pensar que uma maioria absoluta se aproxima de uma ditadura, e assim a democracia resume-se a quê? A escolhermos um novo "ditador" de 4 em 4 anos? Desculpem qualquer coisinha, que sei que estou a exagerar um bocadinho, mas para mim o conceito de democracia é outro e deveria funcionar mesmo sem maiorias absolutas! Mas também já se sabe que teoria e práctica nem sempre, ou raramente, andam de mãos dadas... E já me estou a alargar demais nestes assuntos, que não são, de todo, a minha especialidade...! :)
De resto, vamos ver so o Benfica começa com o pé direito e se faz uma época como deve ser, e se os nossos atletas em Berlim se portam bem...! A nossa maior esperança é o Nelson Évora que salta já daqui a um bocadinho...!! :)



No meio das actualidades descobri um artigo interessante sobre um novo conceito que consiste em contratar Chefes de cozinha para fazer refeições em casa! Além de ser prático e diferente, podemos descobrir receitas novas e interessante e quem sabe aprender alguns truques!! :) Pareceu-me uma óptima ideia!
Alguns exemplos: Chef@home; Personal Chef ; Cozinho por si e Afreudite.



Deparei-me ainda com um artigo interessantíssimo sobre a memória humana que me fez lembrar um texto antigo, da autoria de um amigo.

Diz o artigo, resumidamente e sem transcrever, que a nossa memória às vezes parece ter vontade própria. Ainda que pareça lógico que vamos aprendendo com a experiência ao longo da vida, e que isso nos vai impedir de cair nos mesmo erros e disparates, de ficarmos desiludidos, frustrados ou doridos com situações que conseguimos antever, a verdade é que não é bem assim... A memória das experiências pessoais é traiçoeira, escorregadia e selectiva. Acabamos por esquecer o que não queríamos esquecer ao mesmo tempo que memórias que queríamos apagar acabam por emergir quando menos esperamos!

A propósito deste assunto disse, há algum tempo atrás, William Jack (inspirado como sempre!):

We have a certain tendency to learn with our mistakes but easily forget how much it hurt. So here I sit now. After an amazing bloom about coffee and queues and beautiful women, I blame myself. But only today! Sim, ainda bem que somos humanos, para podermos viver intensamente, assim como descreves! Tudo graças à nossa memória com vontade própria. Que funciona, mas não de hoje para amanhã.

Cientistas ao palco

Cientistas?? No palco?!?!?! Passo a citar:


"O Cientistas ao Palco é um dos projectos portugueses seleccionado pela Comissão Europeia no âmbito da Noite dos Investigadores 09. O projecto utiliza o teatro e as artes visuais para levar os cientistas ao grande público. Os cientistas são os principais actores e vão desenvolver várias performances produzidas para o evento.
Em simultâneo com as performances de teatro irão acontecer uma série de actividades interactivas para o público.
Vão ser criados múltiplos espaços onde cientistas e o público podem envolver-se na realidade do “cientista”.
Para os investigadores...é uma oportunidade de participarem na divulgação das diferentes facetas da vida de um cientista, num ambiente informal e através do teatro. Com esta experiência podem aprender uma nova forma de partilhar o conhecimento com o público e adquirirem experiência na comunicação de ciência.
Para o público... é uma oportunidade de envolverem-se de perto com a realidade dos investigadores, de reflectirem sobre determinados assuntos científicos, sobre o impacto da ciência na nossa sociedade e de partilharem o seu conhecimento com os cientistas.
Para todos...é uma oportunidade de conhecerem, reflectirem e debaterem a ciência - o palco onde os cientistas têm o papel principal."



Já começámos a preparar o evento aqui em Coimbra! Entre teatro, coros, muitas discussões filosóficas (!!) e filmagens, temos passado bons momentos, certo?

Entre outras coisas já percebi que tenho muito potencial para uma carreira profissional na área dos "bloopers"!!! :)
Se tudo corresse bem à primeira também não tinha piada, não é...?!

Em contagem decrescente....

Já se avistam as férias lá ao fundo!

Mas, como sempre, nos últimos dias de trabalho surgem mil coisas para fazer...!!! É da maneira que depois o descanso sabe melhor! ;)

I just can't get enough

Nem mesmo a falta dos Depeche Mode estragou a noite! Até porque, NV superou as expectativas, e muito!! Especialmente na opinião do público masculino, completamente rendido à prestação da menina Nadeah em Human fly "... spelled F-L-Y"!!
Mais músicas antigas do que do último álbum, ao contrário do que esperava, mas com muitos momentos altos, como "I just can't get enough", "Love will tear us apart" e "I go out on friday night".

Como extra (um extra que foi a melhor surpresa do dia!) ainda tivemos direito a um concerto a lembrar muitas queimas, uma espécie de "best of" dos The Gift! Ficaram a faltar algumas "obrigatórias" como "Front of, "Clown" e "Butterfly"... Talvez por ter sido um concerto SOS!! :) Desculpo só porque não faltou a MINHA "Ok! Do you want something simple?" :):):)



Depois disso, um Domingo de muito sol! Com tanto sol, exposições, concertos, esplanadas e muito boa disposição... fico cansada!! :) Mas é um cansaço do bom, daquele que até parece que carrega as baterias para mais uma semana que está já ali a espreitar... :)
